Mr. K. Timmayya Gupta (73) is presently a resident of the Bharathi Vruddhashram,
Puttaparthi. He narrates his experiences of the Divinity of Bhagavan in his own
words.
'I was working at Dharmavaram in 1980. I was taking interest in Sai activities even
from those days. We came to Prasanthi Nilayam one day. Swami told us 'you are in
Dharmavaram. All have to come through your place to Puttaparthi. You arrange some
tiffin, etc to the devotees'. We said 'yes, Swami!' When we came to brass-tacks,
it appeared like a Herculean task. But we promised Swami that we would do it. So
we started. Most unexpectedly the response from the public proved to be overwhelming.
The activity which we started then continues to date. The only difference is that
the venue is changed from the Dharmavaram railway station to Sri Sathya Sai Prasanthi
Nilayam railway station.
In 1980, Swami asked us to go and whitewash all temples and schools in the then
Sri Sathya Sai Taluk. We used to start from Prasanthi Nilayam. Bhagavan used to
flag us off at 6 AM. He used to send us in a separate vehicle with breakfast and
lunch being carried. When I went to do the work, I could not take up whitewashing
as I was afraid that I might harm my skin with sunnam (lime). We were asked by Bhagavan
to take up street-cleaning also. So I began to try my hand in it. At that time I
was working as Tahsildar. The village elders came to me and said, 'how can we allow
our Tahsildar to take up the broom in our village? It is an insult to us'. Thus
I could not do any work except partaking the breakfast and lunch sent by Bhagavan.
Besides, I felt that when Bhagavan was spending so much on our food, transport,
etc., He could have engaged professional workers to do the job better, at less cost.
Next morning, while flagging us off in the morning, Bhagavan said, 'some people
think that workers can be engaged to do the work in the villages. Yes, I have money.
I can spend and engage professional workers and get the job done better. Then why
am I asking you to do this? Only to help you get rid of your ego.' I did not share
my thoughts with anyone, but Swami replied to my doubts as if He had read my thoughts.
He is omniscient.'
